Tips for personal safety during R&G week
Tips for personal safety during R&G week
Remember the most important thing during Raise and Give week, above having a fun week and even raising money for charity is to ensure that nobody is injured and everyone gets home safely each night.
To ensure this is the case – please consider the following tips, when enjoying yourself and raising money for fantastic causes during the week:
Pace yourself
The temptation may be to start drinking early in the week and early in the day, but to ensure you get to enjoy all of R&G week remember to pace yourself and not to drink too much and miss out on the rest of the week.
Make sure to eat properly before you start drinking, as this can prevent symptoms like nausea, upset stomach, and headaches, and to continue eating and drinking water during and after a night out.
Get involved in events
The student’s union, clubs and societies have arranged a great variety of events to raise money for charity. It is a great opportunity to engage in events on campus and take part in worthwhile causes.
Raise & Give Week is also a normal academic week, with a full schedule of timetabled lectures and tutorials so make sure not to miss any of your academic commitments.
Avoid Walking Alone at Night
Make sure to walk in numbers or get a taxi home at night. When at all possible, stick to busy streets with lots of lighting and traffic. Do not take dodgy shortcuts.
Be Careful before Getting into / out of a Car
If you are being dropped off or are getting a lift – make sure to pick a spot that is a designated car space and make sure to check your mirrors before exiting a car, so as to avoid hitting any cyclists or pedestrians.
Be careful walking / running or cycling through or near campus
Due to the increase of people on campus and with additional traffic around the campus, remember to be extra vigilant and careful when moving in and around campus.
For walkers, runners and cyclists – remember you can pick up a free high visibility bib / running vest or armband by emailing john.cudmore@ucc.ie
Tell Your Friends your Whereabouts
Both during the day and at night, make sure your friends know your whereabouts. Let someone know where you are going, who you are going to meet, when you are likely to be back, and your aim of going to the place. This precaution is especially relevant when going off campus.
Follow Your Intuition
Don’t be afraid to act assertively if you are uncomfortable or if you think someone is acting inappropriately or to leave an area entirely if it feels unsafe.
With valuables such as wallets and smartphones, ensure they are not left unattended or in open sight. Use a locker / cloakroom to store valuables if needed.
Student Community Support (SCS)
Student Community Support is a pastoral service established by UCC SU and UCC in order to provide non-judgemental support to students who may find themselves in vulnerable or unsafe situations, especially at busy times of the year. SCS serves as a secondary purpose as positive engagement ambassadors within the local and wider communities.
The helpline number for the SCS from 8pm to 4am on Raise and Give week is – 083 3526678
Respect the SCS, Security & Services Operatives Staff
UCC Security & Services Operatives Staff located on campus are focused on ensuring the safety of all personnel. Remember to cooperate with these staff members during events and while on campus and remember we are all part of the same UCC community.
The student community support, are solely concentrated on the welfare of their fellow students and are in place to provide pastoral care. They are fellow students, who have given up part of their own R&G week to aid the participants in R&G week to have a fun and safe time. Always treat them with the same respect and dignity you would like to be treated with.

Be the change you want to see in your own life by being the Hero of your own life.
Having goals is easy. Achieving your goals is a challenge. They take your time, your effort and your sustained action. The more of yourself that you put into accomplishing your goal, the more benefit and self-confidence you will gain beyond the fulfilment of that goal.
With our Goal-Setting & Motivation tutorials, we will consider your strengths and challenges in the achieving of your goals in the past before moving towards a plan to sustainably achieve your current and future goals. We will focus on personal time management and scheduling as fundamental building blocks to attain your goals whilst maintaining a more balanced, well rounded life. The tutorials will teach you how to take command of your time and goals so that you can take control of how you want your life to develop.

and provides links to further information about each service.
