The Counselling and Health Studies Centre (CHSC) was founded in 1984 with the support of UCC authorities. The Centre is to the forefront of research in its application of both health and counselling psychology to the psychosocial and developmental life of older adults. The innovativeness of this work is recognised internationally as evidenced by invitation to address the International Congress of Psychology in Beijing, China (2004), with a symposium on the Centre’s research. The Director of the Centre, Prof. Eleanor O’Leary was awarded The Outstanding Contribution to Psychological Award in 2000 by the Psychology Society of Ireland for her innovative research in the field of psychology.

The main aim of the Centre is to investigate psychological and psychosocial factors and issues in old age and aging with a focus on psychological development, well being and health and then continue with The research programme with no new paragraph.

The research programme largely centres around a developmental model of the person. The aims and objectives of the Centre have been the subject of sustained research enquiry since 1990. The Counselling and Health Studies Centre is distinctive both in its multidisciplinary orientation and its international collaboration. This multidisciplinary orientation involves research collaboration with the Statistical Laboratory, The Traffic Research Unit, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Nutritional Sciences. International collaboration includes Stanford University, USA and Ningbo University, China.
