Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing

NFQ Level 9, Minor award

The Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing is a part-time programme running for 9 months from the date of first registration for the programme. The Certificate has five pathways and applicants choose their pathway at the application stage. The pathways are as follows:

Pathway 1: Gerontological Nursing
Pathway 2: Multiple and Complex Disabilities (Intellectual Disability)
Pathway 3: Medical-Surgical Nursing
Pathway 4: Nursing in the Community
Pathway 5: Nurse/Midwife Prescribing

Entry Requirements

Applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing should normally:

(a) hold active registration on a division of the professional register maintained by An Bord Altranais or be eligible for such registration as required for individual pathways:

(b) have clinical practice experience (and support structures, if applicable) as required for individual pathways: 

Note Re Pathway 4: Applicants for Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing in the Community are not required to have community nursing experience at the point of entry to this programme pathway.

Programme Requirements

Students choose one of the available pathways and complete modules to the value of 30 credits as follows:

Pathway 1: Gerontological Nursing
Theory modules:
NU6070 Practice Enhancement for Nursing (10 credits)
NU6077 Gerontological Nursing: Social, Psychological and Mental Health Perspectives (10 credits)
NU6079 Contemporary Issues in Gerontological Nursing (5 credits)
Clinical Practice/Practicum module:
NU6055 Clinical Practice in Gerontological Nursing (5 credits)

Pathway 2: Multiple and Complex Disabilities (Intellectual Disability)
Theory modules:
NU6052 Person Centred Health Care for People with Multiple and Complex Disabilities (10 credits)
NU6057 Communication, Intensive Interaction and People with Multiple and Complex Disabilities (5 credits)
NU6070 Practice Enhancement for Nursing (10 credits)
Clinical Practice/Practicum module:
NU6056 Clinical Practice in Multiple and Complex Disabilities (5 credits)

Pathway 3: Medical-Surgical Nursing
Theory modules:
NU6084 Clinical Examination Skills (10 credits)
and three modules to the value of 15 credits from the following (subject to a minimum quota of 10 students to run the module):
NU6072 Symptom Management in Cancer (5 credits)
NU6085 Wound Care for Healthcare Professionals (5 credits)
NU6091 Medical and Surgical Nursing of Individuals with Respiratory Problems (5 credits)
NU6092 Medical and Surgical Nursing of Individuals with Cardiovascular Problems (5 credits)
NU6093 Medical and Surgical Nursing of Individuals with Renal Problems (5 credits)
NU6107 Medical and Surgical Nursing of Individuals with Gastrointestinal Problems (5 credits)
Clinical Practice/Practicum module:
NU6103 Medical and Surgical Nursing Clinical Practice 1 (5 credits)

Pathway 4: Nursing in the Community
Theory modules:
NU6043 Adults and Older People in the Community (5 credits)
NU6044 Health and Health Promotion: Concepts and Principles (5 credits)
NU6095 Primary Health Care Services in the Community (5 credits)
NU6096 Nursing in the Community in Primary Health Care 1 (10 credits)
SS6016 Health and Personal Social Services (5 credits)
Note: There is no clinical practice/practicum module in this pathway. However, NU6095 above incorporates field visits within the context of primary care services.

Pathway 5: Nurse/Midwife Prescribing
Theory modules:
GP6002 Systematic Approach to Assessing and Evaluating Patients (10 credits)
NU6108 Professional, Legal, Ethical and Communication Principles of Prescribing Practices (5 credits)
PF6011 Drug Action and Prescribing (10 credits)
Clinical Practice/Practicum module:
NU6110 Prescribing in Nurse/Midwife Clinical Practice 1 (5 credits)

Examinations
Full details and regulations governing Examinations for each programme will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2013 Book and for each module in the Book of Modules 2012/2013.

MSc in Nursing with Postgraduate Diploma exit awards
Candidates who successfully complete all modules to the value of 30 credits in the Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing programme may apply to transfer into the relevant clinical speciality, where available (Pathways 1, 2, 3 and 4) of the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing programme. On transferring, candidates will be granted exemptions in modules to the value of 30 credits already completed on the Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing and which are part of the relevant clinical pathway on the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma exit. Following transfer, candidates will have the option of exiting with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing following completion of the remaining 30 credits in the relevant pathway. A candidate who wishes to continue progression for the degree of Master must complete the programme within 5 academic years from the date of successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma Examinations, subject to the programme being available.
