HISPANIC STUDIES (not on offer in 2011-12)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MA in Hispanic Studies may be taken full-time over 12 months or part time over 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should normally have a primary degree with at least a Second Class (Grade I) Honours in Spanish (Language and Literature). They may be required to present themselves for interview or further assessment before a final decision is made. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Department informally before applying. The first deadline is July 1st but late applications are accepted.

Programme Requirements

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
LL6010 Research Methodologies in Modern Languages (5 credits)
HS6002 Research Training (5 credits)
HS6003 Advanced Translation Skills (English-Spanish) (10 credits)
HS6004 Approaches to Translation (Spanish-English): Theory and Practice (5 credits)
plus
20 credits from the following: (one of these should be in the area of the candidate's research dissertation. The choice of options must be approved by the MA Coordinator.)
HS6005 Research Project (10 credits)
HS6006 Advanced Spanish Language Development (10 credits)
HS6007 Spanish Narrative Techniques (10 credits)
HS6008 Novel into Film: The Spanish Context (10 credits)
HS6009 Politics and Culture in Latin America (10 credits)
HS6010 Latin American Cinema (10 credits)
HS6011 Portuguese Modernism and Fernando Pessoa (10 credits)
HS6012 Catalan Studies (10 credits)
HS6013 Golden Age Studies (10 credits)
HS6014 Aspects of Spanish Grammar and Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (10 credits)
HS6015 Moveable Margins: Gender and Identity in Contemporary Hispanic (Catalan) Culture (10 credits)
HS6016 Contemporary Galician Literature (10 credits)

Part II
HS6001 Research Dissertation (45 credits)
