REGULATIONS FOR THE BCL (Hons) (LAW AND IRISH) DEGREE [CK304]

FIRST YEAR - FIRST UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN LAW AND IRISH

First Year consists of core modules to the value of 60 credits. In order to be admitted to the First University Examination in Law and Irish a student must have satisfactorily attended, for at least a full academic year subsequent to entry to the Faculty of Law, prescribed modules as follows:

LW1001 Legal Writing (5 credits)
LW1150 Introduction to Legal Systems (5 credits)
LW1153 Criminal Law (10 credits)
LW1154 Law of Contract (10 credits)
LW1158 Dlí Bunreachtúil (10 credits)
GA1003 Bunstaidéar ar Theanga agus ar Chultúr na Gaeilge (15 credits)
GA1030 Bunreacht na hÉireann (1937): An Leagan Gaeilge (5 credits)

Examinations

Three Year Rule

Students must pass the First University Examination in Law and Irish within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the Faculty of Law, only for very serious reasons.

SECOND YEAR - SECOND UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN LAW AND IRISH

Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 50 credits and elective modules to the value of 10 credits. In order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Law and Irish a student must have: (a) passed the First University Examination in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner, for at least a full academic year, prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

LW2001 Legal Skills - Statutory Interpretation (5 credits)
LW2252 Law of Property (10 credits)
LW2255 Law of the European Union (10 credits)
GA2010 Úsáid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge II (10 credits)
GA2030 Cásanna Dlí agus an Ghaeilge (5 credits)

and modules to the value of 10 credits to be chosen from the following:

GA2003 Filíocht na hOchtú hAoise Déag (5 credits)
GA2012 Prós na Seachtú hAoise Déag (5 credits)
GA2014 Logainmníocht na Gaeilge (5 credits)
GA2016 Dialanna na Gaeilge (5 credits)
GA2017 Litríocht na Naoú hAoise Déag (5 credits)
GA2018 Stair an Aistriucháin in Éirinn sa Tréimhse 1550 - 1900 (5 credits)
GA2019 Cineálacha Scéalaíochta: An Litríocht Bhéil agus an Gearrscéal Liteartha (5 credits)

THIRD YEAR - THIRD UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN LAW AND IRISH

This year is can be completed in one of three ways, as follows:

(i) at approved placements in Ireland or abroad;
(ii) at an approved placement and study at a University abroad;
(iii) at a University abroad.

In either case, such programme of studies must be under the direction and supervision of Director of the Programme and the Head of Department of Law. This year on placement and/or abroad forms an integral part of the degree programme.

Path (i)

Students take prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

LW3363 Placement II Project (5 credits)
LW3365 Tionscnamh Taithí Oibre (Dlí) I (5 credits)

Path (ii)

Students undertake a placement in Teaching Period 1 and attend a university abroad for Teaching Period 2.

Students take prescribed modules to the value of 30 credits as follows:

GA3011 Tionscnamh Tréimhse Taithí Oibre I (10 credits)
LW3365 Tionscnamh Taithí Oibre (Dlí) I (5 credits)

Students take a further 30 credits of approved courses at the host university.

Path (iii)

Students attend a university abroad for Teaching Periods 1 and 2. The choice of courses to be followed abroad is to be made in consultation with the Director of the Programme and the Head of the Department of Law in UCC, equivalent to 60 credits.

FOURTH YEAR - BCL (Hons) (LAW AND IRISH) DEGREE EXAMINATION

Fourth Year consists of core modules to the value of 25 credits and elective modules to the value of 35 credits. In order to be admitted to the BCL (Hons) (Law and Irish) Degree Examination, a student must have: (a) passed the Third University Examination in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner, for at least a full academic year, prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Úsáid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge (10 credits)
GA3030 Litríocht na Nua-Ghaeilge agus an Dlí (5 credits)

and modules to the value of 35 credits to be chosen from as follows:

Either
(a) 20 credits of Law elective modules and 15 credits of Irish elective modules
or
(b) 30 credits of Law elective modules and a 5 credit Irish elective module

Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the Faculty of Law, only for very serious reasons.
