The BA (Hons) (Language and Cultural Studies) pathway is a four-year full-time programme which enables students of a modern continental language to study for one year in an approved European university. Its aim is to offer students the experience of studying a European language and its literature in an area where it is spoken, and also using the same language as the medium for studying their second subject. In this way students have the opportunity to become familiar with the methods and perspectives of another approved European university system.
FIRST ARTS (Language and Cultural Studies)
Students wishing to take the Language and Cultural Studies
Pathway in Second Year choose four subjects in First Year, at
least one of which must be French, German, Italian or Spanish. See
CK101 - The BA (Hons) programme for more
details.
SECOND ARTS (Language and Cultural Studies)
No student may register for Second Arts (Language and Cultural Studies) until he/she has passed the First University Examination in Arts. The selection of any module is conditional on the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the College being satisfied that he/she is capable of profiting by attendance thereat. A student may not select modules which involve a timetable clash.
In Second Arts (Language and Cultural Studies) students will continue with their chosen language and one of their other subjects (which may be a second language). Students register for a Single Subject (50 credits in their chosen language and 10 credits of their second subject. NB: This Single Subject option is available only to students taking French or Italian or Spanish) or a Major Subject (40 credits of their chosen language and 20 credits of their second subject) or a Joint Subject (30 credits each of their chosen language and their second subject). Students intending to study two languages will be required to nominate their preferred language at the end of First Year (this is to facilitate organisation of placement in an approved foreign university during Year Three).
Change of Module
All applications for change of module must be completed online,
using the REGISTRATION AMENDMENT online facility, by Friday,
12 October 2012. No changes in registration will be allowed
after this deadline.
Examinations
Full details of regulations governing Examinations for each programme will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2013 Book, and for each module in the Book of Modules, 2012/2013.
Three Year Rule
Students must pass the Second University Examination in Arts (Language and Cultural Studies) within three academic years from the date of first registration for Second Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.
THIRD ARTS (Language and Cultural Studies)
Third Year (Language and Cultural Studies) is spent in an approved foreign university (depending on the student's chosen language), where students will study courses/modules to the equivalent value of 60 credits. Single-Subject students (NB only French and Italian and Spanish are offered as Single Subjects) may take a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 credits in the second subject or a cognate subject, with the balance of credits to be taken in the foreign language. Major-Subject and Joint-Subject students may take a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 30 credits in the second subject or in a cognate subject, with the balance of credits to be taken in the foreign language. All courses will be assessed by the approved Host University.
