Máire Herbert, MA, PhD (Cantab)

Máire Herbert is a graduate of NUIG and the University of Cambridge. She has been a scholar at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge, and visiting professor in the Dept of Celtic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University. She was recently appointed to the Placenames Commission of Ireland. Academic interests include Irish literary and cultural history of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, early Irish saints' Lives, and Irish-Scottish contacts in the pre-Norman era.

John Carey, MA (Harv), PhD (Harv)

John Carey did his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Harvard University, where he subsequently taught as lecturer and associate professor. His research interests include cosmology, legendary history, cultural connections between Ireland and Wales, tales of the transmission or recovery of traditional knowledge, and the portrayal of the Irish 'Otherworld'. Depending on demand, he offers instruction in Middle Welsh at postgraduate level.

Kevin Murray, MPhil, PhD

Kevin Murray is a graduate of UCD where he completed a PhD thesis on the Old Irish text Baile in Scáil. His research interests include placenames, editing medieval Irish texts and medieval Irish legal materials. He is one of the editors of the Locus project.

Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh, MA, PhD (Cantab)

Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh graduated with a first class honours BA in Old Irish and German from the National University of Ireland, Galway, where she also completed her MA thesis. She subsequently won a scholarship to attend the University of Cambridge where she conducted a comparative study of Old Irish and Latin devotional material for her PhD thesis. Her research activity concentrates on medieval Irish religious material including devotional literature, prayers, litanies, hymns and apocrypha.

Pádraig Ó Riain, MA, PhD; Ollamh / Emeritus Professor

Pádraig Ó Riain was lecturer in Celtic Languages and Philology at UCC from 1964 until he was appointed to the Chair of Early and Medieval irish in 1973, a post he held until his retirement in 2002. Among other distinctions, he received the Humboldt Prize in 1995 and the Parnell Fellowship in Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 2002. He is a member of the Placenames Commission of Ireland. His research interests include hagiography, onomastics, Irish manuscripts and, most especially, the Irish martyrological tradition. He is one of the editors of the Locus project.


Emma Nic Cárthaigh, MPhil., PhD

Emma Nic Cárthaigh was a recipient of the NUI Travelling Studentship and subsequently a scholarship from the Placenames Branch of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. She regularly works as a lecturer in Early and Medieval Irish and with the Locus Project. She presently holds the post-doctoral fellowship of the De Finibus Project. Her research interests include onomastics, medieval Irish literature and bardic poetry.

Brent Miles, PhD

Brent Miles completed his doctorate in Medieval Studies at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto. He has taught Celtic literature and Welsh at St. Michael's College, and for three years was an O'Donovan scholar at the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. His research interests include the Ulster Cycle and the development of Irish prose, the study of classical literature in medieval Ireland and the traditions of Medieval Latin from Ireland and the British Isles. He is currently a Post-doctoral Teaching Fellow.
