Discovery

A by Peter Armbruster  and Sigurd Hofman at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany in 1996.

Occurrence

As only a few atoms of element 112 have ever been made through a nuclear reaction involving fusing a zinc atom with a lead atom.

                                                   208Pb + 70Zn 277Uub + 1n

Isolation of an observable quantity has never been achieved, and may well never be.

Properties

This element has the atomic number 112 and is currently the heaviest element ever produced by man. It has an atomic mass of 277.

The element was created by bombarding lead foil with highly ionized zinc atoms. The atom detected decayed after 280 microseconds, loosing an alpha particle to form element 110. The stability of this element is an important confirmation of the nuclear shell theory.
