A by Peter Armbruster and Sigurd Hofman at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany in 1996.
As only a few atoms of element 112 have ever been made through a nuclear reaction involving fusing a zinc atom with a lead atom.
208Pb + 70Zn
277Uub + 1n
Isolation of an observable quantity has never been achieved, and may well never be.
The element was created by bombarding lead foil with highly ionized zinc atoms. The atom detected decayed after 280 microseconds, loosing an alpha
particle to form element 110. The stability of this element is an important confirmation of the nuclear shell theory.
