Xenon
Xenon, Xn, is an inert Nobel Gas element,
found in Group 0 Elements
of the periodic table.
- Atomic Number : 54
- Relative Atomic Mass : 131.30
Discovery
Xenon was discovered by Ramsey and Travers in the final residues from
the evaporation of liquidified air.
Occurrence
Xenon is present in the atmosphere in trace amounts
(approximately 0.08 ppm).
Extraction
Xenon is extracted from the final residues of liquified air by
fractional distillation, from which the major components
(i.e. oxygen, nitrogen, carbon oxide, and water vapour) had been
removed.
Preparation

Properties
- Xenon is a colourless, tasteless odourless inert gas.
- Xenon is very inert chemically due to its electronic configuration.
Uses
- Xenon is used as a filler gas in electric lamps used in projectors.
- Xenon is used to create a plasma arc, which gives brilliant white light.
Detection and Analysis
Xenon is detected by spectroscopic methods.
