Indium

Indium

Indium, In, is a soft silver main group element, found in Group IIIb of the periodic table. Indium, In, is an electron acceptor.

Discovery

Indium, In, was discovered by T Reich and F Richter in 1863AD.

Occurrence

Indium is widely distributed in the ores of tin.

Indium occurs in the mineral Cylindrite from Bolivia, which contains up to 1.0% indium.

Extraction

Indium is isolated from the litharge, which is formed by the lead content of zinc ores during the refining of that ores.

Properties

Indium is a soft metal with a low melting point.

Uses

Indium is used to electroplate lead alloys used in bearings to protect them against attack by lubricants.

Indium is used in the semi-conductor industry in the manufacture of diodes and transistors.

Detection and Analysis

Indium is identified by the characteristic indigo blue line in its emission spectrum, which is responsible for its name.
