Discovery

Ruthenium was discovered by K K Klaus in 1844AD.

Occurrence

Ruthenium occurs with the other members of the platinum group in their ores.

Properties

Ruthenium is

a white silvery metal,
is stable in air, but oxidises at high temperature,
is not attacked by cold or hot acids. However, when potassium chloride is added to the acid, ruthenium oxidises explosively.

Uses

Ruthenium is used as a hardener for Platinum, Pt.

Ruthenium is used as a catalyst.
