Niobium, Nb, is a transition metal element, found in
Group Va of the
periodic table.

Discovery
Niobium was first identified by C Hatchett in a chromium mineral
from Connecticut, USA. in 1801AD.
Niobium was isolated by Blomstrand in 1864AD.
Occurrence
Niobium is found in Niobite, Fe(NbO3)2, (also called Pcolombite).
Niobium also occurs at low levels in a wide range of other minerals,
including
- monazite,
- yttrotantalite,
- tinstone,
- pitchblende, and
- wolfram.

Properties
Niobium is almost identical in its chemical properties to tantalum.
Uses
Niobium is used in association with tungsten carbide in the
manufacture of steel-cutting tools.
