Krypton
Krypton, Kr, is an inert Nobel Gas element, found in Group 0
of the periodic table.
- Atomic Number : 36
- Relative Atomic Mass : 83.80
Discovery
Krypton was discovered by Ramsey and Travers in the final
residues from the evaporation of liquidified air.
Occurrence
Krypton is present in the atmosphere in trace amounts (approximately 1 ppm).
Extraction
Krypton is extracted from the final residues of liquefied air by
fractional distillation, from which the major components
(i.e. oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour) had been
removed.
Properties
Krypton is a colourless, tasteless odourless inert gas.
Krypton is very inert chemically due to its electronic configuration.
Detection and Analysis
Krypton, Kr, is detected by spectroscopic methods.
