Germanium
Germanium, Ge, is a lustrous hard metalloid main group element, found in
Group IVb of the periodic table.

Chemically, it forms compounds in the +2 and +4 oxidation states.
Discovery
Germanium was discovered by Winkler in 1886AD.
Occurrence
Germanium occurs in the mineral germanite which contains up
to 5% of the element.
Properties
Germanium is a gray-white brittle metal.
Uses
Germanium is used
- in the manufacture of rectifiers and transistors and
- as the fluorescent material is discharge lamps.
