Extraction
Manganese is extracted by the reduction of manganese dioxide with carbon.
Properties
Manganese is a gray-white brittle metal.
Manganese is slowly attacked by water.
Reactions
Uses
Manganese is used
- in many alloys,
- is an essential trace nutrient,
- in the form of manganese dioxide, as a depolariser in dry cells,
- to decolourised glass, and
- in the form of potassium permanganate as an important reagent
in analytical chemistry.
