Facilities
The Genetics and Biotechnology Lab is currently split across two locations, with one lab located in the Lee Maltings complex and the other in the Biosciences Institute. Our lab is well equipped for molecular genetics/genomics research (PCR machines, high-throughput DNA extraction, etc).

The lab has excellent facilities for molecular biology, including dedicated facilities for cDNA-AFLP & microsatellite analysis (e.g. ABI3030xl) and real-time PCR analysis (ABI7900HT, pyrosequencer). The lab is well equipped for genomics research on model genetic organisms such as Arabidopsis thaliana, the nematode C.elegans and mammalian/microbial cell culture.

Since July 2005, our lab has had a purpose-built controlled environment room (CER) for cultivation of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The CER allows for growing of ~ 2000 Arabidopsis plants at a time. The CER has cool white fluorescent strip lighting (120- 150µmol/m2sec light intensity), temperature (16-25oC) & daylength control, ventilation/cooling system, and watering system adapted for the growing of large numbers of Arabidopsis thaliana plants on a six-weekly cycle.

The lab also has a range of walk-in plant growth chambers for growing a wider range of plant species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. All plant growth facilities are located in the Lee Maltings.

Services
ABI 3130xl
The Genetics and Biotechnology Laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at UCC is willing to assist other research groups in UCC and the wider research community for research projects and applications conducted on the lab's ABI3013xl Genetic Analyser.
The 3130xl is the latest generation of 16-capillary electrophoresis instruments for the medium throughput laboratories. The system offers industry-leading performance, plus sophisticated automation capabilities.The Applied Biosystems GeneMapper Software v3.7 can be used to analyse the results. Application include: AFLP, microsatellite, SNP detection and custom analyses.
We can assist with Fragment Analysis using capillary separation for size determintation of fluorescent labelled DNA fragments on the Applied Biosystems 3130xl Capillary Electrophoresis Genetic Analyser. We use the POP-7 polymer so both DNA sequencing and fragment analysis are possible, although the majority of work conducted on the Genetic Analyser at present is fragment analysis.
Having discussed your research needs with you, and agreed the design, scale and costs of your experiment, we are willing to provide an at-cost or low-cost service whereby the Genetic Analyser Technician will dilute your PCR samples, add a sizing standard, and run your samples for you and send you the data electronically.
