Fáilte!
Early and Medieval Irish, a core member of Scoil Léann na Gaeilge / School of Irish Learning (along with Béaloideas / Folklore and Nua-Ghaeilge / Modern Irish) and of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, participates in two main degree programmes, Bachelor of Arts (BA) Gaeilge/Irish and BA Celtic Civilisation. It offers modules in Old Irish Language and Literature in both the second and third years BA in Irish, to both day and evening classes. The programme in Celtic Civilisation provides a full degree qualification, which may be taken in combination with another Arts subject, in accordance with Calendar regulations. Moreover, modules from this Celtic Civilisation programme are available as minor subject components for those taking major or combined degree options in other Arts subjects.

Teaching for the BA in Irish is through the medium of the Irish language. We value the support of Nua-Ghaeilge / Modern Irish for the requirement that at least one module from Early & Medieval Irish be taken in both second and third year BA. Thus, the two Disciplines work together in ensuring that all graduates in Irish language and literature are made familiar with the full spectrum of the subject. Celtic Civilisation, taught through the medium of English, is designed to enable students to gain knowledge of many aspects of the culture of the Celtic-speaking peoples, and to set this within its broad European context. The programme aims to provide an integrated, interdisciplinary approach, based on primary source-material.

The Department of Early and Medieval Irish received the highest rating of 5 in the 2009 University Research Review.
