News: De Rebus update
(23/2/2012)
John
Barry and Hiram Morgan's edition of Richard Stanihurst's De rebus in
Hibernia gestis has
been submitted to Cork University Press.
Stanihurst's De rebus
was one of the most important contributions to humanist Latinity
in early-modern Ireland. As a consumate stylist and a
sophisticated observer of contemporary society, as well as a
propagandist for Old English rule in Ireland, Stanihurst was
well placed to give a seminal - and controversial - account of
his home country to foreign audiences. His text became the
source of polemic debate for much of the next century, rousing
refutations by Philip O'Sullivan Beare, Stephen White, John
Lynch, and many others.
